I’d say give it a go. Though something to keep in mind is that people have vastly different reactions to it. Don’t expect going into LOK to have all your ATLA questions answered, and if you get past the first two seasons, season 3 is apparently somewhat of a masterpiece.
“Being the Avatar doesn’t hurt your chances with the ladies.” - Avatar Roku
tbh you can interpret it as ~just friendship~. however, there’s an interesting parallel between what you’re arguing and those in the general media that call ladies that are actually dating “gal pals”. seriously, two women can be pictured making out and the magazine will still just refer to them as “good friends”. we have this engrained mindset in society that unless two women are rolling around naked, they couldn’t possibly be dating/in love.
asami and korra holding hands, staring into each other’s eyes and going off together is as close as you can get to a bisexua l ending. im about to reblog a post that has all the parallel imagery to the varrick/zhu li + kataang ending which absolutely rams home how romantic the ending is. the reason they can’t kiss is due to the well documented censorship around LGBT issues in kids animation, and as you said this is really good step forward of that front. mike dimartino shared an article which explicitly talked about how progressive and romantic the ending was and frankly i think that’s the end of ambiguity.
so yeah, you can personally interpret is as “friendship”. but if you do that, it’s wor th considering why that approach ignores the creators intentions, artists intentions, wider media commentary and the vast majority of fans.
But if this was true why wasn’t their relationship developed during the series after they got past an awkward friendship? Literally nothing screams romantic relationship. There isn’t a foundation to this relationship. I think it was fan bait if anything. Is being independent not a thing anymore. Why does anyone have to be romantically involved to have a happy ending?
I was gonna take the time to disentangle your argument and show where you’re missing the point. But then I realised this has more to do with your personal shipping preferences.
Exhibit A:
Exhibit B:
If you honestly think people who believe Korrasami is canon are “ridiculous idiots”, that makes the creators Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino ridiculous idiots.
yeah, definitely. i need to catch up on s3 + s4 as i’m sure there are loads of good moments there. im not working off the right laptop to make gifs, but ill certainly do this when im back home.
i didn’t see that!
there you go. the interpretation really isn’t up for debate anymore. people are of course able to have their own headcanons and whatnot, but it’s definitely confirmed canon that this is supposed to be read as a romantic ending and that’s fantastic. i still can’t quite believe it.
i’m pretty sure the avatar series was already going to go down in animated history, but it certainly will now.

I think one really important thing, which differentiates the Makorra/Korrasami conflict from the Kataang/Zutara one, is that even if you ship Makorra hardcore and feel upset at this ending, which I understand - I really do, and I sympathize - you can feel hurt and post about your disappointments, but I do think that it’s worth acknowledging the amazing step in terms of social issues and representation that Bryke has taken.
Yes, it would be nice to have your ship be endgame, but even if you feel sad and bitter about Korrasami being endgame, on an intellectual, real-world level, you have to applaud Bryke for what they’ve done. This is a HUGE step in the media, and it matters. It matters so much that a mainstream show for children has a same-sex relationship, that kids growing up watching LOK and figur ing out their own feelings and sexualities are going to see people like themselves. You can ship Makorra as much as you want - I think Bryke has also done something great in leaving their relationship open enough for plenty of fics and fanarts to ensue - but I think it’s pretty ignorant to hate the fact that Korrasami became canon if it has such a positive impact on real people’s lives in the real world.
@wan-the-avatar said: to be perfectly honest, korrasami being endgame did not change the narrative of the story by much at all, the same way kataang being endgame didnt change the narrative of atla. there were a few hints added, but everything flowed fairly well.
Yeah, sorry - I didn’t mean narrative in the holistic sense. Just significant changes to character plots. Korra/Asami walking off holding hands, while not of great ramification to the plot overall, is significant both to their development and the tone of the show.
And I’d disagree about the Kataang thing. You remove Kataang (and their endgame) from the narrative of ATLA and it’s a very different story. But I get your point, it doesn’t affect the entirety of the story. I just think there is a difference in how ATLA and LOK were written and possibility the internet and the greater interaction of fans has slightly influenced decisions. Interesting de bate to have, I might be completely wrong and they actually planned to drop the love triangle from day one.
Yeah I will definitely watch them. My issue was LOK was affecting my enjoyment of ATLA ,so I stopped. It definitely seems like S3 + S4 are strong pieces of work and I’ll catch up.
I think there’s an interesting debate to be had on how much Bryke shifted because of the fans (a debate I’m really unqualified to be in because I haven’t watched 50% of the show!). From an outsider it really does look like certain pairings/love triangle were dropped because of negative feedback and the Asami/Korra relationship which has always been popular gradually woven in. This is in contrast to ATLA where they had their blueprint and stuck to it. I’d be interested if a more informed person had any thoughts on that, do you guys think Bryke moulded the LOK narrative in light of feedback?
The Avatar with their love for the series finale
I haven’t followed LOK in a while, but this was really amazing to see. LOK seems to have done something really groundbreaking here and I’ve gotta give them props for it.
